Our Approach

We use methods that are in sync with the grading levels of the London College of Music and Media.  This includes scales, basic to intermediate chord theory, left and right hand technique exercises to improve strength and independence for weak and untrained fingers.

In addition we utilize chord groups to be able to identify and play in any given key with or without the use of a capo.  We teach the Nashville numbering system, using both "slash chords" and diminished and augmented chords.

As a member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors, we can prepare those who are interested for certification testing in June 2009.

Of course the goal is to be able to play songs, so we begin with songs using basic chords and gradually progressing as each student is ready at different levels. We begin to learn how to read music charts for guitar and bass, and how to use those skills to play with others, and enjoy your instrument in a variety of environments.

Some students express an interest in a specific style of music.  When able, we help them to acquire the skills to be able to do that.  Everyone would love to learn to play like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Joe Satriani.  Last year there was interest in Led Zeppelin (Jimi Page), Hendrix, U2, Cheryl Crow, Rockabilly, Flamenco and more.  I'm good, but I'm not THAT good, but it was an awesome stretching year for me to have to be able to prepare myself to offer some help in a variety of areas.  I can help, but its important to bear in mind that becoming a great guitar player is a result of hours of dedication and repetition.  You can go as far on your instrument as you want to if you are willing to work at it until it's not work any more.

It is very important to me to be a positive musical influence on my students.  There is a great deal of negativity and death in some of today's music, and I avoid those influences in my own life.  I can still teach those who are currently interested in the dark side of music.  I encourage my students to learn how to play correctly and learn the fundamentals of music, and then pursue their own personal interests.  I also encourage my students to lean toward that which is positive and brings life.

When able, I love to teach in a worship environment.  It is part of the call on my life to be a catalyst to a new generation of worshippers.  I believe that is why we were created.  Therefore, I desire to be not only a positive musical influence, but a positive spiritual influence as well.

Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes. Our sessions are tailored to each individuals needs. Expect that your time will pass very quickly.

Students range in age from 10 to 70. Parents are welcome to sit in on sessions if their child is comfortable with that
